Congratulations to FirstPoint USA client, Jean Avitt Youth, who has committed to a soccer scholarship at the University of Jamestown, North Dakota. We caught up with Jean to find out how he found the process of obtaining his scholarship, what he is looking forward to most upon arriving in the states, and his plans for the future.
Jean has previously attended Bingham Academy, Ethiopia but tells us he has been in the UK for two years. Despite enjoying his time here, Jean tells us he is looking forward to moving out to the US as he believes it will continue to help him grow as a person. Furthermore, Jean adds that he was attracted to studying in the US as, “the education in the states is world class and they put a lot of attention and emphasis into both academics and athletics, which will help me to play soccer while studying at the same time.”
Regarding the process of obtaining his scholarship, Jean tells us that he found the process went very smoothly. He stated, “the FirstPoint USA team were in constant contact and kept me up to date until I settled on Jamestown, and from there everything went well. The coach walked me through everything, and Ross Leebody from the FirstPoint USA team was always there if I needed any further assistance – he was a great help.”
Jean states that his decision to attend Jamestown University was influenced by the fact that both the coach and the university value academic excellence as well as hard work as an athlete. Jean added that he wished to attend a university with an environment that encourages him to do his best both academically and athletically; providing him with options upon graduation, having the skills to become a soccer player, or to go into the professional working world.

As it is such a big country, Jean knows that there are many parts of it that he would not have the opportunity to see if he weren’t a student athlete.
Finally, we asked Jean where he sees himself being in 10 years time. He states that he hopes to be playing for Chelsea FC however, would be happy if he were to be playing for another team.
We’d like to wish Jean the best of luck in both his studies and playing at the University of Jamestown; we will keep you updated on his progress through our various social media platforms.
