Continuing our series of educational webinars for aspiring athletes on their journey to collegiate sport in the States, we spoke to one of the leading practitioners of field hockey coaching who has been at the helm of the successful Michigan State University program for the last 15 years.
Our latest special guest was Scottish field hockey coach Helen Knull, who represented her country at U16s and U18s level before making the move across the Atlantic. Helen earned a field hockey scholarship to Kent State University in Ohio, where she enjoyed a successful playing career as a four-year starter, becoming team captain and leading the team to four straight NCAA tournaments.
A two-time All American, she took on the head coach role at the prestigious Michigan State University in 2010 and is now the Spartans longest serving coach in program history. A highly respected authority within the collegiate game, we were delighted to welcome her on webinar as she spoke to FirstPoint’s Associate Director of Olympic Sports Laura Lewis to cover a range of field hockey topics, discussing her own experience as a student-athlete, being recruited to a top program, the balance between studying and playing, the incredible facilities available in the US and advice for international students following her route.
